Elderhostel presents Kayaking the Lowcountry March 23-28, 2008, Sept 21-25, 2008 Sept. 7 - 12, 2008 ,Oct. 2,-7, 2008 Discover the natural beauty and secret places on waterways in the rural South Carolina Lowcountry. Rivers, creeks and adjoining woodlands are your classroom during the day and early evening. Study many species of birds and view wildflowers visible only from the waterways. Tie your kayaking to the flux of the tides relying on natural time. Related land-based activities show you aspects of the region's history and natural resources. Depending on tides and weather, we may visit a spoil site containing fossils, see numerous wildlife including alligators, wood storks and dolphins. Expect a physically active week. Elderhostel presents Birding By Kayak March 30-April 4, 2008 Sept, 28-Oct.3, 2008 The South Carolina Lowcountry's wild region has over 250 species of interesting and rare birds such as the Painted Bunting, the Bald Eagle, and the Wood Stork to name just a few. Through a mix of salt marshes, river delta and barrier beach, many are only visible from the water. Capture their beauty as you silently flow into their domain by kayak. Stalk through pine forest in search of the Red-cockaded Woodpecker. Use binoculars or a camera to spot the delicate beauty of bird life and see beautiful Knowles Island through a naturalist's eyes.
