Please join internationally acclaimed artist Margaret Evans in April 2013 for a six-day, seven-
night workshop in the South Carolina “Low Country”, a charming and historic area which boasts
beautiful subjects in nature, architecture, landscapes, and waterscapes. Once again, Margaret
will display her teaching and mentoring skills at Palm Key Resort on Knowles Island. Located
on an expansive tidal salt marsh along the Broad River, Palm Key is just a few miles inland from
historic Hilton Head Island, settled in 1663.
Margaret will demonstrate her distinctive pastel and mixed media techniques, while immersing
workshop participants in the sights and sounds of the beautiful and history-rich South Carolina
Atlantic Coast. All six workshop days will be mixed media. Bring your pastels of all shapes, sizes
& brands and Margaret will teach you how to get the best results from your pastel painting
technique: soft & hard types, wet & dry techniques. This is also an excellent chance to bring
your favorite media and learn how to develop techniques, working with them individually or
learning to work them together, such as Margaret's acclaimed gallery works in Pastels/Gouache,
Pen/Wash & Watercolors, Oils and/or Acrylics. Landscape will be covered, as well as requests
for flowers, still life, portrait, and figures.
April 1-3, 2013: Artists will spend workshop phase one sketching and painting on location in
three beautiful and historic cities … Beaufort SC, Charleston SC, and Savannah GA. Learn to
sketch outdoors and keep your kit simple for traveling.
April 4-6, 2013: Workshop phase two will find the artists back in Palm Key’s art studio
developing themes started in the field. Or continue to work out of doors, inspired by the Live
Oak and Palm trees, Spanish moss, the salt marsh and salt air, a beautiful sunrise over the river,
or a blazing sunset
You will arrive on Sunday March 31 and meet your instructor and fellow artists in a quiet and
relaxed social setting that evening. Each workshop day will begin with a full breakfast, served
in Palm Key’s Smax’ dining hall, followed by either a “paint away” or studio session. Lunch will
be served at Palm Key or packed as a picnic when traveling. Each day’s activities will be capped
with a group dinner, also served in Smax’. Check out at noon on Sunday April 7 after a final
breakfast with friends and colleagues.
Those with limited travel time available can opt for one of two 3-day/4-night workshops, either
the “on location” travel days or the studio days.
Local day students, not in need of Palm Key’s overnight accommodations, will also be able to
attend this excellent workshop and enjoy three group meals daily, opting for either the 6-day
full workshop or either 3-day session.
Enjoy free time at sunrise or each evening and get in touch with your own thoughts. Walk along
the marsh, hike Palm Key’s miles of nature trails, bird-watch, or simply curl up with a good book
on a porch with a million-dollar view.
A single fee includes workshop attendance and on-site room & board (based on double
